The definition of HUMANE is : 1. having or showing compassion or benevolence. "regulations ensuring the humane treatment of animals" synonyms: compassionate, kind, considerate, understanding, sympathetic, tolerant; More 2. intended to have a civilizing or refining effect on people. What I find interesting, is that humane leans toward human empathy, and yet does not include being empathetic to humans. Let me explain. It is humane to remove the testicles of male animals and the entire reproductive tract of female animals. Not only humane, but considered 'responsible'. There is even a campaign run by Friends of Animals (friends....?) that since 1957 has advocated for and provided for low-cost spaying and altering since it is the most effective means of preventing the births of dogs and cats, and their subsequent abandonment, suffering and mass killing. As I sit behind my desk in my collared shirt and sweater with dress pants and boots on, I realize something... This is almost exactly the outfit I had once worn to the barn! I bought the sweater I'm wearing today from Izod on sale because I needed "professional" barn clothes for a barn manager job I had accepted. I was expected to dress to impress every day-- dress to impress high dollar clientele at the BARN. Yes, this is a real thing. I bought 3 Izod polos of various colors with jewels or preppy stripes/plaid on them... I bought barely used second-hand britches to replace the holey and stained ones I had had since I began my riding career. And let me tell you, I have pretty much the cutest dog ever. He's kind of an a$$hole though. My dog is half Shiba Inu, half Jack Russell. If you know anything about the breeds, he's kinds a weirdo. Shiba Inu's are medium sized Japanese guard dogs. They're independent, very loyal, but kinda have a "no f*cks given" attitude. EXTREMELY intelligent. Then you got the Jack- and here in America they're pretty popular, especially with horse people. They're small. They're diggers. They are fast, they are athletic, they are high energy. They have the urge to go after smaller animals. They're Loyal, and super intelligent as well. So my dog. Well he is so smart. I once watched him climb the back of the recliner until he could get off onto the kitchen table. He's fast- but not too fast. He's independent- he doesn't need mom or dad or our approval. A "real mom" posted a letter to self-proclaimed "pet parents" saying they need to stop considering and calling themselves this.  Funny because I had a very long drawn out "pet mom" convo via Facebook with someone already. I really need to post it here one day. But let me tell you what fuels these rants by people... IGNORANCE. BOREDOM. LACK OF EDUCATION. JUDGMENTAL TENDENCIES. Did I mention boredom?? This writer posted these as the biggest reasons not to compare yourself to a real parent, because..... (her reasons have the numbers, my responses have the ***) 1. YOU think dogs and cats are fuzzy cute companion animals. YOU think horses are companion animals. What YOU think and what (NAME ANY OTHER PERSON) thinks, believes, or knows is not the same thing. I think my micropig Tito is a family member and I would never eat his adorable little fat bacon filled body. But I eat bacon and pork in general.
